Finding Home, In The Living Room with Jesus

Your Soul Needs to be With God

“The soul seeks God with its whole being. Because it is desperate to be whole, the soul is God-smitten and God-crazy, and God-obsessed.”

John Ortberg

Did you realize that you are needy? Other people probably know you are, but you should know it too. In our culture, being needy is not looked at as a good thing. We tend always to answer the often-asked question “How are you?” with the simple “I’m good.” But is that a mask we put on to cover the neediness of our inner being? Masks are for hiding, protecting, or, as we experience on October 31 every year, for becoming something we are not.

So, if we are masking the neediness of our soul, we are hiding from the truth, self-protecting, and trying to be something we are not. You must know that God does not heal a mask. He wants authenticity and openness to the reality of our need for Him. John Ortberg reminds us, “For the soul to be well, it needs to be with God.”

In my book, Finding Home, discovering the place where your soul belongs, I wrote about the with-ness of Jesus. “Jesus reveals in the Bible how much He loves to be with us. From “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20) to “never will I leave you, never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5), we are assured of the power of our soul being WITH Jesus.”

Are you taking time to become aware of the presence of God? According to Psalm 16:11, we find the full measure of joy in His presence. We can often try to find it in so many other things: entertainment, food, sex, and media. Yet, in my experience, it is never enough. All of those things give us temporary happiness. I always have enough joy when I sit in the Lord’s presence because it profoundly satisfies my soul’s great need to be with its Maker.

When you feel you lack something, I suggest seeking God. He will always be enough to satisfy your soul.

I overflow with praise when I come before you, for the anointing of your presence satisfies me like nothing else. You are such a rich banquet of pleasure to my soul.

Psalm 65:3
